English refugee【英語難民】
In Japan, I see a lot of people out there who are pretty good at understanding written English.
日本では英語に関してリーディングができる人が多い。
This nation’s English education starts at junior high school age. Most of it is reading texts and they are marked by written tests.
この国の英語教育が本格的に始まるのは中学校で(小学校英語教育はほぼお遊びになってるのが現状)、そのほとんどは教科書を読んで勉強して、筆記テストで評価される。
More or less, smart kids score pretty high score on those tests and come to have confidence about English and they say like oh I like English and it might be a good idea to do things that has something to do with English as a career in the future.
賢い子どもは多かれ少なかれテストで良い点をとり、英語に関して自信を持つようになる。そして、英語が好きになり、将来は英語を生かして何かしたい。なんてことを思うようになる。
But I mean not a few Japanese smart kids tend to be kinda introvert and less sociable. They don't understand learning language is figuring out how to communicate with people.
でも、日本の賢い子どもたちには内向的でコミュニケーションが苦手な子が一定数いる。そして言語を学ぶってことは人とコミュニケーションをすることそれ自体だということが分かってない。
They are certainly smart but reluctant to communicate with people. That's huge problem.
彼らは確かに賢いが、あんまり人とコミュニケーションをとりたがらない。これが問題なのだ。
They think they have difficulties in communicating with foreigners and then try to improve their English by "studying" such as Eiken, TOEIC or whatever.
外国人と英語でコミュニケーションをとることが難しいとわかると、彼らは英検やTOEICなどを“勉強”して英語力を磨こうとする。
So it has been creating individuals that are super smart about "studying" but can't even have a normal conversation.
だからこういった認識の歪みが、「勉強する」ことに関してはとても賢いが、普通のコミュニケーションがとれない人たちを生み出してきた。
You might call those people "English refugee", who are so hard to get a job that has something to do with it cause all you can do is only studying English.
そういった人たちのことを僕は「英語難民」と呼んでいる。英語でコミュニケーションがとれるのではなく、英語を勉強することしかできないから、英語を生かした職に就きたくても就けない人のことだ。
One solution is getting rid of English as one of those subjects, instead, managing all the other subjects in English. English is not a purpose, but should be a tool for something.
解決策の一つとしては、学校の科目としての英語を廃止して、すべての科目を英語で行うことだ。英語は目的ではなく、何かするための手段であるべきだからだ。
You should try to find what you good at and if you find it, you will deepen it in English. That looks like way more natural process learning English.
得意なことを見つけるために頑張って、見つかったらそれを英語を使って深堀りすればいい。そのほうがよっぽど自然なプロセスだと思う。
It's totally easier said than done though, but we need to figure something out to help those "English refugees" in Japan.
言うは易く行うは難しだが、日本の英語難民を救うために何かしなければならないことだけは確かだ。
