Real Listening
When I went to Taiwan, I had this experience. At night I went to a famous club “WAVE” and I was having fun. Music was needless to say so loud that I hardly hear anything but dance music. And I had this guy coming toward to me and he was like “Yo, dude. Korean!” I did heard him saying “Korean”. So I responded to him, “No, man I’m Japanese.” But he said again “Korean!” I thought he didn’t hear what I said, so I kept saying “I’m from Japan. Japan. All right?” but he continued to say “No, no. Korean” I thought he was messing with me.So I was like, “OK, Japanese and Korean are totally different. Look at my face. This is very Japanese-like. I’m Japanese.” Yet the same thing kept going on and on. We were like “Korea!” “Japan!” “Korea!” “Japan!” But at one point, all of sudden, I figured out what he tried to say. He just tried to ask me where the “toilet” was. Loud music and the way he pronounced sounded like definitely “Korea” But it’s not. And I was like, “Oh, man. I’m sorry. The bathroom is at the corner over there.” Thing’s settle down and we were laughing together.
My point was that in a real world, you never have a kind of perfect situation where you can hear everything you want and the person who talks to you speaks in a different way from what you are used to. You never have like, everyone’s quiet for you and everyone cares about you so you can understand perfectly. If you do not understand, you gotta do something. You can ask in a different way or something. If you get used to “perfect situation listening”, like, using your headphone or something in the library, you should take it off and get out of there.
これは台湾に行った時の話。僕は夜、現地で有名なWAVEというクラブに行って踊っていた。言うまでもなく音楽がガンガン鳴り響いていて、ダンスミュージック以外にほとんどなにも聞こえないような状況だった。すると一人の男が僕のほうに近づいてきて、「韓国人！」と言った。僕は確かに彼が「韓国人」と言うのを聞いた。だから彼に「いや、俺日本人だけど」と言った。でも彼はもう一度僕に「韓国人」と言った。僕が言ったことが聞こえていないのだろうと思い、「いや、日本から来たんだ。日本人だよ！わかる？」と言った。でもまだ彼は「韓国人！」って言うから、なんかもしかして俺からかわれてる？と思って「日本人と韓国人って全然違うから！顔よく見て。めっちゃ日本人顔やろ？」と言った。でもその後も同じやり取りの繰り返し。「韓国人！」「日本人！」「韓国人！」「日本人！」…
でも、ある瞬間、突然僕は彼が言おうとしていることが分かってしまった。彼は「トイレ」がどこにあるのかを聞いていたのだ。音楽がうるさいのと、彼の発音がなまっていたので完全に「韓国人」だと思ったのに、全然違うかった。僕は、「ごめん(笑) トイレはあっち。」と言って僕らは笑った。
何が言いたいかというと、日常生活で、聞きたいことがすべて聞き取れて、いつも聞きなれている英語でみんな話してくれる、なんていう完璧なシチュエーションなんてないということだ。みんな静かにしていて、自分のためにわかりやすい英語で話してくれる、なんていうことはない。わからなければ、いろんな方法でわかるまで聞き直さないといけない。もし図書館でイヤホンを使ってリスニングの勉強をすることに慣れてしまっているなら、すぐにイヤホンを外して図書館を出よう。
