Do really learners need a dictionary?【英語の勉強に辞書は必要？】

I got to know the other day that in Japanese high schools the students are told to bring paper dictionaries and use them for learning English.

先日、日本の学校では英語の勉強のためにまだ辞書を使うように指導されていることを知った。

All the elderly Japanese English teachers think it is definitely necessary to use dictionaries learning language.

年寄りの英語の先生たちは口をそろえて言語を勉強するには辞書が絶対必要だと言う。

But I don’t think so. What’s important is getting to know the meaning of words. That’s it. Not just using it.

でも僕はそうは思わない。大事なのはその言葉の意味を知ることで、辞書を使うことそのものではない。

Certainly you can learn something else other than meaning itself with dictionary like the origins of words or something.

たしかに辞書を引くと意味自体のほかに学べることもある。語源とかね。

But, if you keep studying English, you gotta know and learn tons of vocabularies to measure up to certain level of that language.

でも、英語の勉強を続けていくうえで、ある一定のレベルに到達するために必要な単語の数はものすごく多い。

That’s like at least over 10,000 words. Researching the meaning of vocabulary with a dictionary takes certain amount of time like 20 seconds or so.

少なくとも1万語以上。辞書で意味を調べるためには20秒かそこらの時間がかかる。

That is a waste of time to know a meaning of just one word. Let’s say, If you want to know each meaning of 100 words, you gotta take like 2000 seconds, that is over 30 minutes.

それってたった一語の言葉の意味を知るためには無駄な時間じゃない？　100語の意味を知ろうと思ったら2000秒、つまり30分以上かかるんだから。

But in fact, with development of technology, you can easily know the meaning of unknown words instantly with like your phones, tablets or whatever.

でもテクノロジーの発達によって単語の意味くらいiPhoneとかタブレットとかですぐに調べられるようになった。

When it comes to vocabulary building, I suppose it’s enough for you to just look up the meaning of words with those devices.

ボキャビルに関して言うと、そういったものを使って調べて時間短縮したほうがずっと効率的だ。
